Argentine Tango is an urban dance based on connection. Learn the tango connection and gain the tools you need to succeed and feel great in our tango classes and the social dances (milongas) around the city. This program focuses on a different concept each week, where you will learn the language and vocabulary used in our school.

When:

Every Thursday, 7-9 PM, starting April 4th

Where:

Pearl Studios, 500 8th ave, 3rd fl (Between 35th and 36th streets)

Class structure:

  • 15 minutes of biomechanics technique
  • 1.15 hour subject of the week
  • 15 minutes practica at the end

Program:

  • Fundamentals: posture, embrace, feet positions, basic musicality
  • The Five Connections Approach
  • Basic elements of Tango
  • Tango Dance philosophy
  • Dance composition strategies: Free, sequential, and positional improvisations
  • Navigation strategies
  • The basics of leading and following and their strategies
  • The walking systems
  • Paso Basico as a positional system and dance composition strategy
  • International templates: ocho cortado and ocho atras, parada sandwich and resolution
  • Adding boleos, ganchos, sacadas arrastres, and batidos on the templates
  • Basic Styling
  • Dance etiquette
  • How to be creative and improvise spontaneously

Notes:

  • Classes are intense. A decent body conditioning with no injuries is necessary.
  • No partner necessary but encouraged to ensure leaders and followers are equally balanced.
  • Everyone leads and everyone follows. Gender is not attached to the dance role.
  • Bring comfortable clothes and shoes. Not sure about shoes, bring socks.
  • Classes start punctually
  • No make-up classes

What to wear?

Bring comfortable clothes and shoes (no boots, flip flops, platforms) Not sure about shoes? Bring a pair of socks.

  • 72 hours in advance 100%
  • 48 hours in advance 50%
  • No refund after, but we can credit 50% of the value of the ticket towards group classes at our Penn Station location
